After their involvement in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle between the 10th and 13th March, 1915, the 1st Worcestershire battalion of 24 Brigade, 8th Division, moved back to billets at Red Barn. However, their respite from the trenches was brief and on 14th March they returned to the firing line at Neuve Chapelle for a further two days. George Slater was killed here on 15th March when the battalion came under heavy shell and sniper fire.
